The City of Manchester Stadium (also known as the Etihad Stadium for sponsorship reasons) is currently the home ground of Manchester City Football Club, located in Manchester, England.

HistoryEdit

Previously the proposed host stadium for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the City of Manchester Stadium was purchased by Manchester City FC, who were moving from their old ground, Maine Road. The first competitive match played at the stadium was a Manchester City win over Barcelona FC, in a post-season friendly.

In September 2008, Sheik Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), owner of Etihad Airways (national airline of the UAE), bought Manchester City off the former Prime Minister of Thailand, and the City of Manchester Stadium was to be known as the Etihad Stadium, for sponsorship reasons.

The highest ever attendance at the Etihad was the famous 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers in May 2012. There Bosnian Edin Dzeko and Argentine Sergio Aguero provided last-gasp stoppage time goals to clinch the 2011-12 Barclay's Premier League title from arch rivals Manchester United.

In 2014, Manchester City's official website (www.mcfc.co.uk) announced the Etihad Stadium had been accepted an expansion project to a capacity of approximately 61,000; making it the second-largest stadium in English domestic football, behind Old Trafford of Manchester United. The club also announced it would redevelop some residential areas surrounding the Etihad Campus, providing new homes and jobs for the local community.
